When a community chooses to act

The footbridge over the Kafue tributary had been broken for two years. Children waded through crocodile-infested water to reach school. The council said there was no budget.

Then thirty-one households gathered one Saturday morning. They brought poles, wire, corrugated iron and shovels. By sunset, the bridge held.

The next week they fixed the borehole. The week after that, they painted the school.

When communities act, they don't stop at one bridge.
